Cambridge Winter Head 2017
Today saw us take five crews to Cambridge for the annual Winter Head Race, a first for ULBC and an event we haven’t been seen at before. In division four we had the Men’s 1st VIII and the Women’s VIII competing. The men rowed a solid race, with a few equipment failures providing setbacks, however they recovered well and settled into a strong rhythm to catch the crew ahead and go on to win their category. The Women’s VIII also performed well, with some good rowing seen throughout and good execution of the bends in the course by cox Corinne, they went on to finish third in their category. Division five saw three crews take to the water, with the Women’s IV, Men’s second VIII and the Men’s IV. The Women’s IV of Mary, Ellie, Clodagh, Alice and Corinne set a really good pace in the first half of the race, making gains on the crews ahead before storming the second half of the race to catch the crew ahead before the finish, and went on to win their category. The Men’s 2nd VIII spent the first half of their race sitting just behind the crew ahead, until they seized the opportunity to overtake out of the last corner and made good ground on the straight. Finally, the Men’s IV, having already raced in the VIII, found a nice rhythm off the start, however suffering a few collisions with the novice crews set off ahead of them added seconds to their time, although they recovered quickly and pulled it back to a solid third in their category.
All in all- a very successful day for ULBC. Both squads are starting to reap the rewards for their hard work, all under the name and colours of the University of Leicester Boat Club, a club that we’re really proud to be able to represent at events like these. Lots of lessons learned and race experience gained, and we’re looking forward to the next few weeks of training hard as we prep for White Rose Head in a fortnights time.
